Kilims
These are flat weaves. Originally these were made as decorative pieces to cover rugs or other furnishings when not in use, a sort of glorious wrapping paper! They also were used on the walls of yurts and black tents of the nomadic peoples. They usually have slits where the desgin colour changes, and in the finer pieces these slits are often sewn closed with a stitch which has a sensitive outlining effect.
